Italy is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, the rest of the territory, surrounded by the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Ionian and Adriatic seas, extends into the Mediterranean Sea, occupying the Italian peninsula and numerous islands (the largest are Sicily and Sardinia), for a total of 302 072.84 km² and the enclaved microstates San Marino and Vatican City with 60,497,174 inhabitants, is the fourth country in the European Union by population (after Germany, France and the United Kingdom), has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites (54) than any other country in the world, an estimated 100,000 monuments of any sort (museums, palaces, buildings, statues, churches, art galleries, villas, fountains, historic houses and archaeological remains) .
